Many tourists love to visit New Zealand and many ask what are the top things to do in New Zealand. New Zealand is such a beautiful place that has many hidden treasures that are a must do/see. I decided to create a blog post of just 10 beautiful places in New Zealand. Trust me though, there are far more than 10 but these 10 places in no particular order are incredible.

Let’s get started!

1. Riwaka Resurgence:
Located in the top of the South Island near a little township called Riwaka is a beautiful place filled with tranquil pools, moss covered rock and incredibly clear cold water. Around 16km from another small town called ‘Motueka.’

2. Hot Water Beach – Coromandel:
Hot Water Beach is located in Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Around 175km from Auckland by car. This beautiful beach is a must see. It is a huge tourist attraction because underneath the sand is bubbling hot water! It is an activity for both adults and children. You dig your own spa pool in the sand and then relax in the natural springs. Spades are available for hire at a small cost but you can bring your own instead. This could be a whole day activity as there are some great cafes located around the beach. It is also only a 5 minute drive from another famous activity – Cathedral Cove. 3. Abel Tasman Coast Track:
Abel Tasman National Park is a wilderness reserve located at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. This is another huge tourist attraction that is very popular. This walking track includes golden beaches, fur seals, waterfalls and natural rock pools. You have the option to walk the whole track or take a water taxi or even kayak between different locations. Depending how where and how long you want to walk for, the coast track could take between 3-5 days. There are various places to stay along the Abel Tasman Coast Track including 4 huts and 19 campsites. This is a big activity to do but many people enjoy doing this activity. 4. The Hobbiton Movie Set:
This set was the location where The Lord Of The Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film series was filmed. This tourist attraction is located in a place called ‘Matamata.’ For more information on tours of the set and how to get there is on their website – The Hobbiton Movie Set

5. Sky Tower New Zealand:
This is also a popular activity to do in ‘Auckland’ which is a place located in the North Island of New Zealand. The Sky Tower is an observation and telecommunications tower with the biggest views looking out over Auckland city. It stands at 328 meters tall. The Sky Tower also has restaurants that look out over the breathtaking views and they also provide the opportunity to bungee jump off the tower! 6. Waitomo Glowworm Caves:
Enjoy a boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms. As you go through the starry glowworm cave you will experience the magical tiny glowworms that light up the cave. For more information on tours and the location – Waitomo Caves

7. The Giants House:
I feel like not many people know about The Giants House but this is a very cool activity and is suitable for everyone, both adults and children. This activity is located in a small town called Akaroa. Around 1 and 1/2 hours car drive from Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. Beautiful gardens and sculptures made out of materials, such as mosaic. The Giants House is also a bed and breakfast along with a petite cafe that have unique light meals and drinks. 8. Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa:
Located 90minutes from Christchurch by car. Hanmer Springs has a range of different rock pools and spas. This activity is a highlight for many, including both local people and tourists who visit Hanmer Springs.  They also offer spa treatments such as steam rooms and massage. 9. Cape Foulwind Walkway:
This activity is also a walk but the view is truly stunning to look at on a fine, sunny day! Located in a small town called ‘Westport’ on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. There are two walkway options including a short walk or the longer walk. The shorter walk option takes as little as 15minutes and the longer walking option takes around 1 hour. The viewpoint overlooks the fur seal breeding colony. Personally, I really enjoyed this activity as the view was incredible! For more information – Cape Foulwind Walkway

10. Milford Sound:
Most people know New Zealand as being filled with breathtaking views and incredible picture-perfect scenery and it is! The Milford Sound is a fiord located in the South Island of New Zealand, known for its views and scenery. There are many ways to get to Milford Sound. Here are just two options, either drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound, which takes around 4 hours or a quicker way is to go from Te Anau to Milford Sound, which would only take around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Things to do in Milford Sound are kayaking, scuba diving, take a cruise, underwater observatory at Harrison Cove, scenic flights and short walks. For more information – Milford Sound

  1. I had the privilege to visit NZ eleven years ago and I still think of it very often. NZ made a very strong impression on me. One of the things I wasn’t able to do while there, bc I was visiting in the winter, was go to Milford Sound. I would LOVE to return one day, preferably in the summer, and spend some time exploring the sound.

  2. I look up a lot of things about NZ, but I never heard of Giants House and it looks AWESOME. I love sculpture art stuff, so that’s definitely making it to my list!!
